Nové Město nad Metují
Peklo (Hell)
It would be difficult to express the atmosphere of anxiety and tension during the Protectorate period more aptly. Life in which all you do is worry and fear collaborators and finks. All the people who abuse the power they've gained, to get from others what they themselves crave.
The place that filmmakers chose as the destination for a Nazi flunkey Prohaska and Marie and their drive is actually a restaurant designed by the famous architect Dušan Jurkovič. You'll find it in the Peklo (Hell) Natural Preserve, at the confluence of the rivers Metuje and Brodek. Ordering the special cream dessert is a must here, as well as seeing the local statue of a water sprite.
You can make the trip here by taking the red trail from Nové Město nad Metují. The same trail will take you all the way to Dobrošov where you can have a look at the fortification, designed to protect Czechoslovakia from the occupation.
When you return to Nové Město nad Metují, to the square called Czech Bethlehem, you'll find a castle and many Renaissance houses with their typical archways and frontal gables.
