Karlovy Vary
Hotel Thermal
The dominant feature of the Karlovy Vary centre town is the hotel Thermal, a Functionalist building in a remarkable location. It's the cultural focal point of the whole town and the setting of the world-renowned Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.
Why is Karlovy Vary a film fans' paradise? Thanks to the festival, there are many opportunities to spot your favourite stars of the silver screen; John Travolta, for example, who flew his own plane on the way to Czech Republic. In the historical centre, you could run into the charismatic Robert De Niro, taking a walk on the local colonnades. You could glance at the lovely Scarlett Johannson as she was sunbathing by the hotel pool. You could even meet the wobbly funny looking Chinese guy, beating about with a stick while the cameras were pointing at him. Don't worry; it was only Jackie Chan filming Shanghai Knights. If you're not successful in meeting your favourite film hero, no need to be sad about it, you can always enjoy his or her presence on the big screen of the hotel screening hall during the film festival.
